Peter Gillespie made an inauspicious start to his ODI career with three consecutive ducks (dismissed with his third ball, second ball and then first ball) but he retired in 2007 as the second-highest capped Irish player (124 appearances) with 2774 runs at 27.41, including 19 fifties and one hundred - a 47-ball effort against MCC at Bangor in 2005. His record in ODIs and Intercontinental Cup games was mixed, but in the 2006 C&G Trophy he was Ireland's best batsman with 247 runs including a vital knock of 41 in the victory over Gloucestershire. He also finished the ICC Trophy of 2005 with a batting average of 34.25.

He made his debut for Ireland in 1995 as an opening bowler but injury forced him to adapt to the role of middle-order batsman and he scored heavily for his club side, Strabane.
