Rain Rules

Application of the Clark Curves for the calculation of target scores in delayed or interrupted matches

This is the rain rule applied in South African domestic limited-overs competitions, and one-day Internationals played in South Africa before the introduction of Duckworth Lewis<

Introduction

Once a target has been set, the Curve gives a standard against which a team may measure its performance (par) for the duration of the innings. A second curve is also used for calculating targets when the number of overs is reduced before the start of an innings.

Since rain may occur at different times during a match and the effect that the interruption has depends, not only on its duration, but also on when it occurs, different treatments are applied depending upon when the interruption occurs in relation to the match. Another feature of the system is that wickets are taken into account under certain circumstances.



Definitions

NOTE: The "Curves" have been converted to tables for ease of use.

TABLE 1 (Clark Curve 1)

A series a tables giving the Par Percentage of the score which should be completed after each ball in a limited overs match between 20 and 50 overs. To determine the Par Percentage select the number of overs and balls in the left hand column (note that the table stretches over a number of pages) and then move across the to the column with the correct number of overs at the top. For example, the Par Percentage for the 3rd ball of the 4th over (4.3) of a 47 over match is found by selecting 4.3 in the left hand column and following the line across to the 47 column, giving 8.6%.

TABLE 2 (Clark Curve 2)

A table giving the percentage by which the total score reduces as the number of overs reduce (Percentage Reduction). This is shown as a percentage of he target for innings originally scheduled for 45 and 50 overs. For example, if a 50 over match is reduced to 37 overs the target should be reduced to 84.6% Where the original innings has already been reduced to an unusual number e.g. 47 and subsequently reduced to 37 over the PR is calculated as PR(37)/PR(47) from the 50 over column i.e. 84.6/98.1% = 86.2% (Used only in stoppages type 2,3 and 4).

TABLE 3 (Samson's Solution)

A table giving the ratio of final score to current score at the fall of each wicket (3 to 9) (Wickets Ratio). For example, after the fall of the 6th wicket, the total may be projected as 1.37 x the current score. (Used only for stoppage types 2,3 and 6)

STANDARD ABBREVIATIONS

  • PL = Percentage Lost
  • PP = Par Percentage
  • PR = Percentage Reduction
  • PT = Projected Total
  • PTO = Projected Total by Overs
  • PTW = Projected Total by Wickets
  • WR = Wickets Ratio
For the sake of convention, Team 1 refers to the team batting first and Team 2 to the team batting second.


There are six types of stoppage.

TYPE 1

When the delay occurs before commencement of the first innings

TYPE 2

When the delay occurs during the first innings but NOT so as to curtail it completely.

TYPE 3

When the delay occurs during the first innings so as to curtail it completely.

TYPE 4

When the delay occurs before commencement of the second innings and after completion of the first.

TYPE 5

When the delay occurs during the second innings so as NOT to curtail it completely.

TYPE 6

When the delay occurs during the second innings so as to curtail it completely.

A single stoppage may be both a type 3 and a type 4.

Target/Result Calculations.

First establish which type of stoppage it is, the apply the rules below for that type of stoppage.

STOPPAGE TYPE 1

The number of overs lost is divided equally between both teams, who have an equal opportunity to score. NO adjustment is made to the target set by the team batting first. The target curve is selected for the reduced number of overs using Table 1.

For example, the innings for both teams is reduced to 32 overs. Once the team batting first sets a target the par for team 2 to reach this target is as per the column in Table 1 with 32 at the top. There will be no fractions of overs for either team.

STOPPAGE TYPE 2

Although the team batting first has had its innings interrupted it has had a reasonable opportunity to complete its innings. NO adjustment is made to the target. The target curve is selected as above from Table 1 for the appropriate number of overs. If a stoppage occurs in the middle of an over, that over must first be completed on returning to play, but will not be counted as one of the reduced overs left e.g. if play is interrupted after 11 overs and 1 ball and the innings is reduced such that only 15 more overs may be bowled, 15 overs and 5 balls are to be bowled. Multiple stoppages of this type are treated in the same way.

If Team 1 has to bat for less than 5 (0.1 to 4.5) overs at the end of its innings, a different calculation (similar to stoppage type 3 below) is made to avoid anomalies. An Interim Projected Total is calculated as being the Actual Score made at the time of the break, plus the Percentage Lost as a result of the break. A check is made using Table 3 for the number of wickets lost to see if Team 1 could have reached this Projected Total, if not then the lower PTW is used. The additional runs scored after the break are then added to give the Projected Total. This is then reduced (PR) for the actual number of overs to give the target.

Formula:

  • PTO = Actual Score x PP2/PP1
    (where PP1 = Par Percentage when play stops and PP2 = Par Percentage when play resumes)
  • PTW = Actual Score x WR x PP2
  • PT = Lower of PTO and PTW plus runs scored after the break
  • Target = PT x PR
For example, overs 34 to 43 of a 45 over first innings are lost. Team 1 scores 165/6 after 34 overs, then ends up with 180/8.

After 33 overs of a 45 over match the PP1 is 65.7%; after 43 overs PP2 is 93.3%. The interim PTO is, therefore, 165 x 93.3% / 65.7% = 234.32

PTW = 165 x 1.37 x 93.3% = 210.90.

So PT = 210.90 +15 = 225.90.

PR for 35 overs from 45 is 83.5. The target = 225.90 x 83.5% = 188.63 = 189 to win.

STOPPAGE TYPE 3

In these circumstances the team batting first has been robbed of the opportunity of completing it innings and benefiting from the normal acceleration at the end of an innings. It is 'fair' therefore to set the team batting second a higher target than the runs scored by the team batting first. If, however, Team 1 has lost a significant number of wickets, this must be taken into account when calculating this target.

Using Table 1 the projected total (PTO) is calculated as if the innings ran to completion e.g. a side scores 160/6 by the time rain interrupts play; if Table 1 says that 80% of the score should have been made by this number of balls, the projected total is 200. If however, Team 1 was 160/8, using Table 3, their maximum expectation would be 160 x 1.13 = 180. The lower of these two totals is taken. This is then reduced using Table 2, for the number of overs actually received, to give the target. The appropriate target curve is selected, as above, from Table 1. There will be no fractions of an over in the target set for Team 2.

Formula:

  • PTO = Actual Score x 100/PP
  • PTW = Actual Score x WR
  • PT = Lower of PTO and PTW
  • Target = PT x PR

For example, the innings is washed out after 40 overs and 4 balls of a 45 over innings with the score on 185/5

From Table 1 (45 over column) PP is 86.2% of the total. PTO = 185 x 100/86.2 = 214.62 (the probable score that would have been reached in 45 overs).

Checking with Table 3 indicates that they may be expected to reach 1.56 x 185 = 288.6 (PTW) given unlimited overs so the lower number (214.62) is selected for PT (if they had been 185/9 they would have been limited to 1.05 x 185 = 194.25 for PTW and PT)

The team batting second will have 40 overs (the 4 balls are ignored for this purpose). From Table 2 the PR for 40 overs from a 45 over match is 93.2%

PR x 214.62 = 200.03

Team 2, therefore, needs 201 runs to win.

STOPPAGE TYPE 4

Although the number of overs is reduced, the team batting second knows how many overs it has to reach the target from the outset. The target is therefore reduced using Clark Curve 2. This is calculated by reading the percentage for that number of overs from Table 2. The target curve (Clark Curve 1) is then selected for the number of overs. The percentage reflected therein are percentages of the revised target. There will be no fractions of overs.

Formula: Target = Actual score x PR

For example, Team 1 scores 254 in 50 overs. Rain reduces the second innings to 40 overs.

From Table 2 PR is 90.1%. PR x 254 = 228.85

Team 2 has to score 229 to win (par being the curve for 40 overs in Table 1)

STOPPAGE TYPE 5

The innings of the team batting second has been interrupted but will be given an opportunity to complete its innings and reach a target. The number of runs by which the target is reduced depends upon when and how long the interruption was. Using Table 1 the number of runs which should have been scored during the specific balls lost are subtracted from the total. This (PL) is calculated by subtracting the percentage shown against the last ball bowled from the percentage shown against the last ball lost and multiplying by the target. (Adding the runs to Team 2's score is the same as subtracting them from the target. This is what must be done in case calculations are required due to a subsequent stoppage - either type 5 or 6. The rest of the target curve remains unchanged) Only whole numbers of overs may be lost. If a stoppage occurs in the middle of an over, that over is first completed on resumption of play and the PL calculated accordingly, as in the example below:

Formula: Target = Original target x (1-PL)

For example, Team 1 has scored 245 in a 45 over match. The target to win is therefore 246. After 7 overs and 2 balls it rains and the innings is reduced by 8 overs.

From Table 1 (45 overs) 14.9% of the total should have been scored by after 7.2 overs and by 15.2 overs 30.5%. Therefore 30.5% - 14.9% = 15.6% is the Percentage Lost

15.6% x 246 = 38.38 (38) is the runs lost.

The target is reduced to 246 - 38 = 208. The innings is then expected to continue along the same (45 over) curve (as if 41 runs were added to team 2's score).

Where there are further interruptions (either type 5 or 6) the calculations are based on the original curve. In the example above, say, a further interruption occurs after 32 overs and an additional 4 overs (33 - 36) are lost.

After 32 overs the score should be 63.5% and after 36 overs 72.8% i.e. a PL of 9.3%.

PL x 246 = 22.8 (22) runs. The target is further reduced to 208-22=186.

STOPPAGE TYPE 6

The team batting second has been denied the opportunity of completing its innings, so calculations based on setting a target are irrelevant. If the team batting second has a score higher than that of the target curve (Table 1) for the number of overs and parts of an over, completed at the time of the curtailment it is declared the winner. If it is lower than this amount it loses. The number of wickets lost by Team 2 is also taken into account where this makes it unlikely that they would have had enough wickets in hand to reach the target.

Formula: Winning Score > Target x PP

For example, Team 1 scores 218 in a 45 over match; the target is therefore, 219. Rain interrupts after 38 overs of the second innings.

According to Table 1 PP = 78.0% This percentage of the score should have been made by this time. Therefore if Team 2 has less than 78.0% x 219 i.e. 170.82 (170) it is the loser. With 171 or more Team 2 would have won. This is subject to the number of wickets lost by Team 2 being checked. If they were 177/8, according to Table 3, their PTW would be only 177 x 1.13 = 200 which (being less than 219) would make them the loser.

MULTIPLE STOPPAGES

The rules apply to single or multiple stoppages of 1 or more types. For multiple stoppages, each stoppage is treated singly in chronological order. For example, there is a stoppage type 2, then a stoppage type 5 and later a stoppage type 6. The target for the team batting second (together with the target curve) is selected from Table 1 as a result of the first stoppage. The target is reduced and the curve modified because of the interruption of the second innings. The result is then calculated (after the third stoppage) dependent upon whether Team 2 is above or below the resultant target curve.

For example, it rains in the middle of the first innings reducing the match from 45 over to 40 overs each. Team 1 scores 197, 198 becomes the target for Team 2. It then rains again and Team 2 loses overs 5-9.

From Table 1 (40 overs) this is from 9.8% to 20.2% i.e. PL = 10.4%

PL x 198 = 20.59 (20) runs. 20 runs are subtracted from the total.

It then rains again after 36 overs and 3 balls and no further play is possible.

By this time Team 2 should have reached a PP of 87.6% for 36.3 overs.

Winning target = 87.6% x 198 = 173.45 less 20 lost earlier = 153.45 runs.

Therefore, if Team 2 has 154 runs or more it wins. Wickets would, again, have to be taken into account as in the example above.

FRACTIONS OF OVERS

Apart from stoppage types 1 and 4, fractions of an over must be taken into account as described for each stoppage type. In calculating the number of overs to be received after a rain break, there will be no fractions (except when completing an over in stoppages 2 and 5).

PENALTIES FOR SLOW OVER RATES

Where a side has been penalized for slow over rates and is subsequently facing a reduced number of overs e.g. 43 instead of 44, all subsequent calculations will be made as if it were a 43 (in this example) overs innings.

For example: Stoppage type 4; 5 overs are lost. The target is reduced as if it were for a 43 overs game reduced to 38 overs.

Stoppage type 5; overs 5 - 9 (inclusive) are lost. The Percentage Lost is calculated as if it were overs 5 - 9 of a 43 over innings.

Stoppage type 6; the match is curtailed after 40 overs. The "target" is calculated at the 40th over of the 43 over curve.
