Vengsarkar batted two hours, twenty-three minutes for his 107; Gavaskar took more than four hours to reach his century, be- fore cutting loose with a glorious range of strokes. He hit three 6's, all of Cowley, and twenty 4's. Rice and Rock shared an open- ing partnership of 138 for Hampshire and there were confident displays from Jesty and Cowley before Stephenson declared 54 behind on the first innings. Gaekwad dominated the Indian's second innings, reaching his century in three hours (eighteen 4's). Venkataraghavan set Hampshire to score 290 in three hours, and while they showed no inclination to accept the challenge, the door suddenly seemed open for an Indian victory.
