Date-stamped : 29 Jan95 - 10:30 MATCH REPORTS and commentary, Test 5, India in Australia, Feb 1-5, 1992 Australian team for 5th test Marsh and Waugh are out, Moody and Wayne Phillips (opener, Vic) are in. Teams: for Australia, as announced, with Warne 12th man. for India, More is back instead of Pandit, otherwise just the same as in Adelaide. Border won the toss, and is going to bat first. Its going to be a fairly hot day in Perth. T5, Aus v Ind, D5, 1st hour Border won the toss, and decided to bat - Taylor took the first ball from Kapil, down leg side, taken on the pad and away to fine leg (and clearly the umpires cheated - Crafter & Prue - as they didn't give him out, never mind that no-one bothered to appeal, but enough of that). They didn't bother to run, as Taylor hadn't played a shot. Taylor took a single next ball, and Phillips faced his first ball in tests, but wasn't able to score from the next four balls. Prabhakar on from the other side - Azharuddin said earlier that he wasn't 100% yet, but that they needed him to play, and expected he'd be OK. First ball to taylor, hit in the air to Srikkanth at short leg (form the bat, no pad) - not caught, in fact, took him on the protector... A maiden over. Phillips managed four from a thick edge along the ground through gully which went to the boundary, from the last ball of Kapil's second over. He took another, deliberately played in the same area, from the first ball he faced from Prabhakar. He didn't last long though, after a couple of big in swingers, Prabhakar got one to move away, took the edge, and was caught by More. = Phillips C More B Prabhakar 8 1/10 @11:21 Boon in next. Taylor lasted another 20 minutes or so, before he was caught off bat and pad. = Taylor C Srikkanth B Kapil Dev 2 2/21 @11:44 Drinks at 2/28, with Boon on 12, Border 0, extras 6. T5, Aus v Ind, D1, lunch Aust 2/28 after the first hour. Tendulkar dropped Boon before he'd added to his score (12) at deep gully - a hard hit slash from Srinath. Prabhakar was off the field for 20 minutes or so after the drinks break, Tendulkar bowling to give Kapil a break.. At lunch, Boon 23, Border 14, extras 6 Aust 2/53 - 50 up in the last over before lunch. T5, Aus v Ind, D1, 3rd hr - stumps Border was caught behind from a no ball by Kapil in the first over after lunch, regulation edge through to More. The no ball call came well before the ball got to the bat. More almost threw it away before he realised that it wasn't going to be out, though none of the other fielders were confused. Boon got a bottem edge through slips - landing well in front, from Prabhakar. The Boon/Border 50 partnership came up in about an hour and a half. Border attempted to push his bat away from one from Kapil that ended up following him - got an inside edge that just managed to go past leg stump, and even provide a couple of runs for Border. Prabhakar has been bowling well, Kapil hasn't in general (good balls of course, but not enough of them). Srinath bowled fairly well, though bowled quite a few that didn't need to be played, and Tendulkar was just about as I have come to expect - variable, and unpredictable - which is probably the ideal form of bowling from him. The ball isn't swinging as much now as it was in the pre-lunch session. The outfield is fast - balls frequenly making it to the boundary, even though chased hard, and sometimes, as with a nice drive from Border just then, when they're not chased at all - would have been silly. Mark Waugh is currently 133 not out playing for NSW against SA, which is good for him, but not quite as good as it sounds, as SA have no bowlers at all. Bayliss has just passed 50 - with a very big six apparently. (Chan 9 is a bit slow, they're saying 106 for Waugh and 32 for Bayliss). Raju is getting a bit of bowling now. At drinks, Boon is 41, Border 36, and Australia 2/95 (8 extras) T5, Aus v Ind, D1, tea Raju continued bowling after drinks - Boon just looked like he wanted to hit the ball after More had failed to take one that had turned and jumped a bit... OK, that's not what realy happened, but it did look a little that way - really boon thought about a cut, very late, when he saw the bounce, played it, not very intelligently, and missed it, just before More took the ball, or attempted to, as he dropped it - possibly put off by Boon's bat waving right in front of his face. Hundred up for Aust now. Waugh just out in NSW for 158. And while the TV were showing horses chasing one another, Boon brought up his 50. Raju's just got a couple of balls to turn quite a lot, going way past Boon's bat, caused a 2nd slip to be brought in. 100 partnership now, 2/122, Boon 55, Border 49. Border's 50 was the next run. First real appeal just turned down, by Raju against Border for a bat pad catch at short leg. Impossible to tell from the TV on those. TV has vanished for news for the last 10 minutes of the session (which is actually OK, as I would have guess it more likely that they'd have had the news break during the first half hour of the stumps session, missing just 10 minutes, then the tea break, is more rational than I'd generally give Chan 9 credit for - its also very unlikely to happen on Monday). Border just gave Srikkanth an easy catch (apparently - radio commentary only) = Border C Srikkanth b Kapil Dev 59 3/138 @5:48 Boon is not out 61, and tea will be taken there. That's Kapil's 399'th test wicket - just one more to go for 400 (just in case any of you can't subtract). T5, Aus v Ind, D1, 5th hour Kapil almost had Jones out caught behind first ball, after tea, but no edge (no appeal - ie: Jones was beaten, definitely didn't hit it). Jones took three from the next ball. Jones just gave a bat pad catch to Srikkanth from Raju, that one was well caught - flew quickly, knocked up, into his shoulder, then into the air, then caught easily as it fell. May have come directly from the bat. = Jones C Srikkanth B Raju 7 4/145 @16:11 Moody in next, back to test cricket after a couple of years (this is just his fifth or sixth test - his first against India). Moody hig a hard straight drive, to bring up Aust's 150 - 4/153, Moody 5. At drinks, 4/181, Moody 21, boon 75. ------ Subject: T5, Aus v Ind, D1, stumps 4/181 with an hour left to go, Boon has 75 in almost 5 hours, just 15 an hour, chances of getting to his hundred tonight aren't great... Two hundred up for Aust, Moody has been hitting a bit, then lapsing into defensive mode for a few overs. Boon has been steadily slow, and watchful - every time he goes to hit one hard he misses, and then has to take a little walk to calm down. Moody 34 now, Aust 4/206. Boon now has 500 runs in the series, and is number 5 of Aust batsmen who have done that (and two of those had 6 tests, though Kim Hughes is way over the 500 - 594 in his 6 tests) - Bradman heads the list (715), and from a 5 test series. The others are Simpson (539) and Border (521 from 6). Boon still has the rest of this innings, and probably Australia's second innings to add a few more. Kapil is back on now, bowled more overs today than anyone else, (24 before this, next hoghest is 20). The new ball is due (taken? not that I saw). Kapil just bowled a no ball (again 2nd of the over), Moody hit it back hard to Kapil, who just got a hand to it (not a chance) as it passed him, then continued to the stumps - Boon just got his bat back, but even if he hadn't the there was no way the umpire could have given it out, he was moving away to get into a good position as the ball banged into the stumps. Kapil continues to bowl some great balls, some tat aren't much, and too many no balls. Prabhakar is getting swing again, so I guess the new ball was taken and I just missed it. At stumps, 4/222, boon 91, Moody 42, extras 13. 90 overs completed just a minute or so after 18:00. No controversial decisions... T5, Aus v Ind, D2, start-end of Aus inn Aust 4/222 at the start of play, with Boon 91 and Moody 42. Kapil bowled 2 no balls in the first over, Boon didn't add to his score. Then Moody took two fourse from Prabhakar's first couple of balls, to bring up his fifty, blocked the third, then edged the fourth to Vengsarkar at first slip = Moody C Vengsarkar B Prabhakar 50 5/232 @11:09 Healy came in and took four from his first ball. Boon added one to his score from Kapil's second over of the day. 5/237 after three. He then brought up his hundred with two fours, though not from the same over - one from Kapil, then one from Prabhakar, both nice drives, quite straight. Australia's 250 came with a three that Healy took after just pushing a ball from Prabhakar back down the ground, defending, after the previous ball, which he'd intended to cut, had swung back into him causing him to have to rapidly change to a defensive shot. Boon started to look to attack a bit more after getting his hundred, took another four from Kapil, then attempted to drive Prabhakar, got an outside edge, after the ball swung late, which flew to Sidhu at point, who got down to take a good catch. = Boon C Sidhu B Prabhakar 107 6/259 @11:38 That was Prabhakar's 50th test wicket. Hughes in next, but that was the end of the over, so he's at the non-striker's end as Kapil bowls again. Hughes took two from one he drove back from Prabhakar, Raju came across, managed to slow it, and prevent a boundary, but not stop it. Healy took two fours from Prabhakar, a hook, that he hit to ground between Srikkanth's legs at a deepish short leg, then a square on drive, to bring up 1000 test runs. Earlier Hughes had been beaten by a couple of nice out swingers. Drinks - 6/278, Healy 21, Hughes 8, extras 16. T5, Aus v Ind, D2, Lunch 6/278 half way through the first session, with Healy & Hughes batting. Double bowling change just after, Srinath and then Tendulkar in, the latter for the first time since the first session yesterday. Healy attempted a cut from Srinath, the ball bounced more than he expected, and he got a top edge through to More. = Healy C More B Srinath 28 7/290 @12:23 Reiffel in at number 9 for his first test innings. Tendulkar lasted just one over, now Raju is in to bowl to Hughes, Reiffel yet to face. Hughes blocked a couple of balls, then let loose, a huge six lofted over deep mid on, then went back to defending, and took a single. Reiffel had just one ball, which he defended. Reiffel's first ball from Srinath swung in a long way, between bat and pad, just missed the off stump, appeal for caught from More & Srinath, didn't look to have hit the bat. Hughes played a maiden from Raju, with not even a sign of agression - no sigh of turn either, though the ball is still fairly new. Hughes brought up the 300 with a hook from Srinath for four, after Reiffel had taken a leg bye from a ball from which there was also an LBW appeal. Hughes managed to hit one to Srikkanth at short leg, directly from the bat, bit not very fast. = Hughes C Srikkanth B Srinath 24 8/303 @12:44 Kapil back on after that, Raju off again, Reiffel still yet to score. McDermott opened his scoring with an on driven four from the first ball of Srinath's next over. Reiffel finally got off the mark with a two. McDermott drove Kapil in the air over long off, a powerfully hit six that didn't get all that high. Next ball, Reiffel pulled Srinath for four to deep mid on. Reiffel took one, then McDermott three to end the session. 8/326 - Reiffel: 8, McDermott: 14, extras: 19 T5, Aus v Ind, D2, end of Aust innings McDermott continued as before lunch, hitting four to deep mid off, in the air, from Kapil's first over, then a single. McDermott now 19, Reiffel 8, Aust 8/331. Sidhu didn't return to the field after lunch, Amre is on the field. Prabhakar on at the other end, LBW appeal against McDermott from the 5th ball, going down leg side (and Srikkanth looked as if he was trying to catch it, but couldn't get to it), then a very high bouncer ball to end the over. McDermott drove Kapil straight again next over, along the ground this time, very straight, and another boundary. Kapil has 2/100. Reifell got one that just moved away a little from him from Prabhakar, got the edge, and through to More. = Reiffel C More B Prabhakar 9 9/338 @13:52 Whitney in last, hast to last 5 balls for Kapil to even have a chance of getting his 400th this innings. Prabhakar started with an in swinger, but well outside off stump, Whitney took a single just dropped behind square on the on side, Srikkanth around, threw down the bowlers end stumps, but Whitney was in. McDermott took two from a high hit shot, just safe, on the on side. Kapil Dev now to Whitney. Sidhu appraently has a stomache problem. McDermott hit another four, from Prabhakar this time, again lofted, again fairly straight. He's 31 now. But that's all he's going to get - a few balls later he tried to hit over mid wicket, and just succeeded in hitting it to Srikkanth. = McDermott C Srikkanth B Prabhakar 31 10/346 @14:03 = Whitney not out 1 = Extras 20 (1b, 7lb, 12 nb) = Overs 125.5 All Out 346 = O M W R Nb W = Kapil Dev 40 12 2 103 13 0 = Prabhakar 32.5 9 5 101 1 0 = Srinath 25 5 2 69 1 0 = Tendulkar 5 2 0 9 0 0 = Raju 23 6 1 56 0 0 = ------------------------------------------------------------------- Srikkanth took 5 catches, equaled the record for catches in an innings by a non-keeper (two others I believe). McDermott opened for Australia, taylor at first slip, Moody at second, Reiffel at third, Jones in fine gully, and Border in the (normal) gully. First ball bounced a bit, Srikkanth tried to take the bat away, but was unable to - from the face of the bat to the ground well in front of first slip. He took a four to third man from a later ball to open the scoring, then was beaten later in the over. Hughes on at the other end, to bowl the first ball to Sidhu, who took one from a deflection to fine leg. Players to have taken 5 wickets in an innings before Srikkanth: Richardson for Aust, 35-36 against South Africa, Singh for India against England, 76-77, and Azharuddin for India against Pakistan 88-89. Next over from Hughes, with the score still 5, Srikkanth got one from bat and pad, but just dropping in front of him, away from the field. That was a good over, then Srikkanth took 12 from Hughes' next, 2 fours, and two twos. First no ball (and extra) from McDermott's next over, then Sidhu's second run, another single. Srikkanth truned his shoulder into one later in the over, then went for a hook, fell just short of Hughes at fine leg - single. 0/20 Srikkanth 17 Sidhu 2, extras 1. T5, Aus v Ind, D2, tea Hughes to Srikkanth - another hook, this time very very close to reaching McDermott, who just couldn't quite get under it, even with a last minute dive, another two. In a later over Hughes almost had no luck at all, balls from Sidhu falling just short of gully, going over the slips - everywhere but into a fieldsman's hand, but eventually one got a much finer edge, and through to Healy, from an attempted drive. = Sidhu C Healy B Hughes 5 1/25 @14:53 Drinks taken as Manjrekar came in, to face Hughes for just one ball in the over. Srikkanth took four leg byes, just wide of a diving Healy down the leg side, from the first ball of McDermott's next over - carried about 40 metres from the thigh pad. He took another four (leg byes) in a very similar fashion, but too wide for Healy to even bother diving. Big caught behind appeal next ball, certainly came from something, probably the arm. McDermott responded with a very fast one. He got another four, this time runs, along the ground, through slips to complete the over. Manjrekar took a single from the first ball of Hughes next over, from a ball pitched on leg, and turned to fine leg. McDermott to Manjrekar, who drove for three to deep mid on - McDermott had to chase it, no-one else was near (rare to see bowlers chase balls into the out field). mcDermott ended the over with a very good ball that rose steeply at Srikkanth. Next over McDermott got one to rise, took Srikkanth on the helmet as he attempted to avoid it, and away for another 4 leg byes. Reiffel in to replace Hughes now, and after his over, Whitney on at the other end to replace McDermott. (McDermott 8-3-0-15, Hughes 7-1-1-21). At 1/55, the TV is about to vanish to the news, Srikkanth 23, Manjrekar 13. Srikkanth seems to continue playing risky shots in the last few minutes before tea. At tea, India 1/58, Manjrekar 13, Srikkanth 25, 15 extras. T5, Aus v Ind, D2, 5th hour Reiffel continues after tea, India on 1/58, after Australia were dismissed for 346. McDermott's first ball of the session, in the next over, took the edge of Srikkanth's bat, to Moody at second slip, low and to his left, dropped. Srikkanth tried a pull, about 25 minutes later during which nothing much happened, from way outside off stump, got it quite high over Boon's head at short leg. Boon ran back to near the umpire, and held the catch without difficulty. = Srikkanth C Boon B McDermott 34 2/69 @16:30 McDermott got one from the edge of Tendulkar's bat first ball, but short of the slips. The rest of the hour seemed pretty slow - Manjrekar took a boundary from the last over, that Phillips dived over at mid on - that was his first boundary in well over an hour and a half. At drinks: India 2/95, Manjrekar 26, Tendulkar 19, extras 11. T5, Aus v Ind, D2, stumps India 2/95 as the last hour of the day starts, chasing Australia's 346. The hundred came up in the first over after drinks, Manjrekar adding the five with a two and a three. Fantastic catch by Jones between second slip and gully (not third slip, not really a fine gully) just got rid of Manjrekar - diving left horizontal, about a metre from the ground. Manjrekar was attempting to turn it to the leg side, got a leading edge, going very fast. Moody at secod slip was already turning to chase the ball to the boundary. = Manjrekar C Jones B Hughes 31 3/100 @17:12 Vengsarkar got one that flew just short of Border in gully, from about his second ball. He got off the mark with a single a couple of overs later. But that didn't last long... = Vengsarkar C Taylor B Hughes 1 4/109 @17:25 Again, Vengsarkar was trying to turn Hughes to the on side, from the back of the bat to Taylor at first slip, who held it safely, but looked a bit ungainly as he fell backwards. That was Hughes' 50th first class wicket of the season (so they say). It will be interesting to see how well Azharuddin handles the bounce at Perth .. Border has a leg gully, short leg, and short mid wicket for Hughes, as well the slips and gully. He got off the mark with one he turned from his hip to fine leg. With Whitney bowling, just the short leg for Azharuddin. Azha took two from a no ball, then went under a very high bouncer, then was beaten by one just slanting across. He took another two to mid wicket. Tendulkar meanwhile has been adding to the score, with the occasional four, and other ones and twos (threes are not that common, usually if it goes that far, it reaches the boundary). Then Hughes got one well up, from his slower ball, took Tendulkar on the back foot on eth full, big LBW appeal, not given. Tendulkar looked at his bat, perhaps edged it just before it took the foot. Next over Hughes got one to bounce at Tendulkar, aimed at the chest, from the glove to Border, but only on the bounce. Attendance 7708 & 10444 for the two days so far (in order). McDermott got a short ball, outside off stump, to move away from Azharuddin who played a pretty terrible shot - just hanging the bat out, and through to Healy = Azharuddin C Healy B McDermott 11 5/130 @17:54 Raju came in with just five minutes to go till 18:00, plus an extra few overs probably, acting as night watchman. Azha was McDermott's 30'th wicket of the series, and is now the leading wicket taker for Aust against India in a series (Benaud had 29). Raju only just managed to last the over, though he was wise enough to simply leave a similar ball to the one that claimed Azharuddin's wicket. Hughes beat Tendulkar with a good one in the next over. He moved to 30 with a two later in the over. The end of that over brought up 18:00, and tendulkar looked quite willing to leave, but there are still a couple of overs left to make the 90 in the day - 51 were required in the Indian innings. McDermott bowled a bouncer to Raju who ducked late, next was up about waist high, over the stumps, left by Raju, well played. He held out McDermott for the rest of the over. Tendulkar took a single from the first ball of Hughes next over, the last of the day - leaving Raju to protect his wicket as well, which makes sense. He didn't have to actually play one till the final ball of the day, which he turned down to fine leg for a single - his first run. At stumps on the second day, Tendulkar 31, Raju 1, extras 21, 5/135. T5, Aus v Ind, D3, 1st hour India resume at 5/135 in reply to Australia's 346, with Raju and Tendulkar at the crease - Tendulkar on 31, Raju acting as night watchman. Whitney in first for Australia, with Raju taking strike. Raju didn't last long, but he did his job last night. = Raju C Taylor B Whitney 1 6/135 @11:02 Raju was also attempting to p,ay the ball onto the on side, and was caught at first slip, a good catch slightly to Taylor's left, but one he would have dropped in the last match... (ie: one that really should be caught, not a very difficult one) Kapil Dev in next, just a couple of balls, and then Hughes to Tendulkar. Next over from Whitney to Kapil, he attempted a big drive, got an edge that flew high and fast over Moody's head at second slip - Moody got his hands to it, but it flew threw, and down near the boundary for two to open Kapil's scoring, a bit luckily. 6/137. Tendulkar cut for four, nice shot, opened his scoring for the day. He took the score past the follow on point later in the over, then continued to score in the next few overs. He looks to be in good form, and has gone to his 50. Kapil is looking a bit scratchy. He looked as if he'd decided to play straight, and was looking a lot better, then Whitney bowled him a bouncer, which he couldn't resist hooking, got it pretty well, but straight down Hughes' throat at fine leg. = Kapil Dev C Hughes B Whitney 4 7/159 @11:33 Prabhakar in at number 9. He received a bouncer first ball. Second ball, outside edge from an attempted cut, and hard at Reiffel in the strange 4th (with no 3rd) slip position. = Prabhakar C Reiffel B Whitney 0 8/159 @11:35 For More, a leg gully has been added to the two slips, gully, Reiffel, and short leg - first ball, he hit it in the air, but forward of point, and took two. Next ball he seemed to lose completely, it took the glove inn front of his hip, and dropped short of Boon. Tendulkar was a little lucky there - turned one from Hughes very fine, just wide of Diving healy down leg side, but got four. Looks as if he's decided that now he's going to have to add runs quickly. Seven in that over. He's now the highest scorer for India in the series, passing Shastri who had that double century to help his total. Tendulkar turned one from Whitney just wide of Boon, directly from the bat - Boon threw out his right hand, managed to get to it, but didn't get it in the right part of the hand to stick. Dropped, but close to an impossible chance. Tendulkar is 73 now, really pushing things along. 8/188. Reiffel on to replace Hughes now, just that over, then drinks, with India still 8/188, Tendulkar 73, More 6. T5, Aus v Ind, D3, Lunch India 8/188 as drinks were taken in the middle session. Tendulkar batting very well on 73 - hope More and Srinath can hang around long enough for him to get his hundred, he deserves it. He almost didn't last there though, in the second ball of the hour, let one go from Whitney - played with his pad, but got the leg a little too far across, ball took the inside of the flap, and was almost dragged back onto the stumps - but didn't bend back that far. He took another four from a nice drive later in the over, then a single to retain strike. India's 200 came from a no ball from Reiffel - the only run recently that Tendulkar hasn't scored - More hasn't had to face many balls, so hasn't had much of a chance to add to his six. He added a nice four, then three in this over, taking him into the nineties. McDermott on now to replace Whitney - he's (McDermott) got some kind of neck problem which kept him off the field for part of yesterday, he's still stretching it now. Tendulkar couldn't keep the strike this over, but More played Reiffel OK till he got a no ball and took a single. With a bit of intelligent bowling, Reiffel ended his over with a high bouncer to Tendulkar, that kept More on strike against McDermott. Still, More just took a boundary, for his first score for ages, which brought up the 50 partnership - 10 of them to More (from 53 all up so far). Just 53 minutes - Tendulkar hasn't ben wasting any time. Tendulkar took two, then three from the last ball, from Reiffel's next over, then four from the first ball of McDermott's next over, to bring up his hundred. A great innings, lots of applause. 14 4's 135 balls, 198 mins. This was his 3rd test century, his second of this series. Another four over gully later in the over. Border jumped, but it was a bit too high, and past much too quickly to give him any chance. McDermott got one to take the under edge of More's bat, into the ground before it reached Healy (well before). No chance, but fortunate. 8/233 at Lunch, 98 in the session, great batting by Tendulkar, who is 112, More is 11, 23 extras. T5, Aus v Ind, D3, end of Indian innings Whitney took up the attack after lunch, with India on 8/233, and wtill with some chance of gtting pretty close to Australia's score, especially if tendulkar can continue as he did before lunch. Boon didn't take the field, Warne on a short leg insteaad. Moody came on at the other end - Tendulkar immediately looking to score, first ball Moody had to get down to field. Its possible this just may be his downfall, if he thinks Moody should be easy runs. More took a couple - this is now the highest 9th wicket partnership for India against Australia (previous was at the MCG this tour). Whitney to Tendulkar, edge from a planned defensive shot, and directly to Moody at second slip. A regulation catch that one. = Tendulkar C Moody B Whitney 114 9/240 @13:49 It was truly a great innings, with almost no support. Srinath out next, just two balls to face. More slashed, got it over slips, for two - he then droe over mid on for four. Looks as if he's going to go after runs now, notr surprising, Srinath hasn't shown much evidence of being able to last long so far this season. Next ball, over extra cover, and another four, that's 250. Then a pull, close to four, but stopped as it landed, they took three, which is probably better than four, as its the last ball of Moody's over. Next over, nice drive, very straight, just missed the stumps, to sight screen for four. Then a single next ball, leaving Srinath just two balls to face. Srinath took three from the final ball - his first score. Not sure why three instead of two which would have seemed safer. Hughes on now, Moody out of the attack after 2 overs for 15 - and almost all of those in the second. One more over from Whitney, then Hughes took the new ball. More hit the first delivery very high over mid off, Phillips ran back, but couldn't quite get to it - just a single. Thnings slowed down a bit, but More was still able to hit Hughes back to long off, in the air, but not near a fieldsman - four more. 9/271. India then followed with 272, thanks mostly to a great century from Tendulkar, and a last minute slog for 43 by More. Kapil opened the bowling for India in Australia's second innings, still needing one wicket to reach his 400 - he bowled initially to Phillips, with Taylor at the non-striker's end. Phillips opened the scoring with a nice cover drive, that manjrekar fielded well to save the boundary and allow just a single. Prabhakar, after five wickets in the first innings, opened from the other end, also initially to Phillips. Prabhakar appealed for LBW, taken outside the line, just - but probably going over anyway, LBW's are hard to get at Perth, ball needs to be a yorker or close. Taylor opened his scoring with a single from Kapil's next over. 0/2 Prabhakar to Taylor now, first ball to the 3rd man boundary for four. Phillips played one back to Prabhakar, who picked up, threw down the batsman's stumps, and gave a single to the Phillips. Not a lot happening for a while - Prabhakar bowling well, and Kapil variably again, as n the first innings - the workload just may have tired him a bit. Another LBW appeal from Prabhakar, this time against Taylor, pitching on middle, swinging back in, maybe going down leg side, probably going over the stumps. More of this slow scoring - eventually Srinath replaced Prabhakar. Phillips got the first boundary in quite a while from that over - through 3rd man again. Raju took over from Kapil Dev with just 6 mins or so to go until tea. Appeal for caught at the wicket (More actually dived forward well past the stumps) but there was no bat, glove, or anything else visible - just pad, with the bat well hidden behind. Minor LBW appeeal next ball. Srinath got the edge of Phillips bat, direct to Kapil Dev in the slips, basically right on the tea interval. Tea taken without Boon coming in. = Phillips C Kapil Dev B Srinath 14 1/27 @15:39 Taylor is 12, extras 1, Austrralia 1/27 at tea, after 17/5 overs. There won't be any TV coverage for the first hour after tea, so what you get from me here will be based on radio reports only (and assuming they keep going, but I think they will). T5, Aus v Ind, D3, 5th hour Australia 1/27 at tea, with one ball left in Srinath's over. With their first innings of 346, and India's first of 272, Australia are now 101 ahead. This hour's commentary wil be based on what I hear on the radio, TV are going away to broadcast news & stuff... brainless cretins, people who want can watch news on some other channel... Boon in to face Srinath's last ball in the over for the first ball of the session - just let go. Kapil back after tea, Taylor takes four, radio says it was a good shot. Kapil then took his 400th wicket, second bowler to do that... = Taylor LBW Kapil Dev 16 2/31 @16:04 Srinath to Boon, with Jones in at number 4 this innings, Boon took a boundary from the first ball of this over, and started his scoring. Commentators say Taylor wasn't happy - possible edge? Doesn't matter. 21 catches in a row is the record for most dismissals in a game in the same manner, consecutively (equals the record). Not much of a record to worry about really - an amusement really. Jones off the mark with two, from Kapil's next over. Just saw a replay of the wicket on the news - looked pretty plumb. Another LBW appeal, against Jones, commentators think going down leg side. Now a caught behind appeal against Boon from Srinath. Boon followed with a boundary wide of gully, bringing up the 50 for Australia. Jones just hit Raju back over his head, and back over the sight sccreen as well. Four all run then, Raju chasing, but he's not fast, and Jones completed the four to move the score to 66, and Jones to 23. Boon is 10. Next four to Boon, and took the score to 2/72 - a bit of a time gap in there though. Another 4 to Boon, just 5 minutes later - this one hit a bit in the air, but away four the field. At drinks, and with the TV just about to go back to the cricket, Aust are 2/80, Jones 27, Boon 20, extras 3. T5, Aus v Ind, D3, 6th hour Australia at 2/80 at the start of the final hour of the day, a lead now of 154 - Prabhakar bowling to Jones, and then Raju to Boon. Boon pulled - the ball just barely rolled into the boundary, with no fieldsman anywhere near - had it stopped they would have been able to run 5, and maybe six. 2/87 now. 15 minutes go past, with nothing more than an ocasional irrational appeal.... Boon ran four to take Aust to 2/93 from an on drive from Prabhakar. Radio interview with Richard Hadlee (by phone) - congratulates Kapil on passing 400 wickets, and expects his record of 431 will be passed. Boon is mostly defending facing Raju. I'm not seeing any significant turn. Jones takes four past the square leg umpire, who had to move out of the way to let it through. 2/98, Jones 33, Boon 30. Boon brought up the hundred with a cut directly to Amre at point, no run there till it was misfielded, allowing the needed two to be taken. Jones just attemped to run out Boon - throw to More, dropped, with Boon well out of his ground, attempting to get back - the ball didn't bounce as high as More expected as it came in to him, couldn't adjust quickly enough. It was quite a good throw by Tendulkar, fielding at backward square after Jones had taken a single from Raju, and seemed to want two that were never there. Another single to Boon, and 2/102. Boon 33, Jones 34. Attendance today 4747, 23174 for the three days. Kapil got an inside edge from Boon, just wide of off stump, down to fine leg for a single (Boon not happy with his shot) - the throw back is way over More's head, and hits Boon in the back as he stands at the bowlers end being irritated with himself... 2/104 Srinath bowled the last over of the day to Boon, a maiden. Boon 35, Jones 34, extras 5, 2/104. 47 overs of the innings gone. Australia lead by 178. T5, Aus v Ind, D4, 1st hour Australia on 2/104 at the start of the fourth day are 178 ahead. They made 346 in their first innings, and then removed India for 272. I'd expect Aust will want to add about 200 hundred today, maybe a few more, and as quickly as they can - quite possibly something of a run chase towards tea. Prabhakar opened for India, Jones drove from the back foot to start the scoring with a cover boundary. Kapil Dev opened at the other end. Prabhakar got the outer edge of Boon's bat - ball flew to Kapil at second slip who held it easily - not a difficult chance = Boon C Kapil Dev B Prabakar 38 3/113 @11:17 Moody in after Boon. He opened his scoring with a three played down to fine leg, the last run being a rather quick one - the throw came back to the bowler's end, Jones was easily safe at the other, but wasn't taken there, and the batsmen took two overthrows - so actually a 5 to open, that must be a bit rare. Boon has 556 @ 79 in this series - 3rd on the list of Aust scorers against India in a series, after Bradman and Kim Hughes (the latter in 6 tests). Moody brought up the 200 lead for Aust with a nice four. Another single, then 3/130, Jones 41, Moody 16. Moody & Jones took a quick single, Srikkanth from short leg moved to short mid wicket, picked up & threw underarm at the bowlers end, but missed, Moody was still well short. Next over, Moody took another short single, this time to cover - no throw, no chance there, then Jones drove Prabhakar straight to the boundary. Prabhakar has 2 slips, gully, and short leg (deepish, as they have been all match). One more, and 3/137. Kapil asks about the shape of the ball, first time this match? - it remains unchanged. Jones turned one just past Srikkanth, who didn't stop it, and had to chase, Jones took two, which brings up his 50. Srinath came on near the end of the hour, relieving Prabhakar (18-3-1-61). Moody took a short single, more or less directly to Raju, then Jones took an easy two to deep backward square. Srinath is asking about the ball now, still no action. Raju in replacing Kapil next over (Kapil 20-5-1-31). He has a slip and short mid off. Good over, a maiden. At drinks, 3/148, Jones 55, Moody 20, extras 5. T5, Aus v Ind, D4, Lunch Jones took four, very fine, past More, from Srinath, then he tried to cut, or something, got a bottom edge, bounced hard at his feet. That's really drinks - its hard to tell watching TV, they rarely say, as if they did everyone would go away and not watch the commercials... 3/152, Jones 59, Moody 20. Raju continues - just a single to each batsman. Jones now 60, his highest score of the series (59 first innings in Melb was previous best). Srinath bowled his first no ball of the day, a yorker well down leg side. Next ball, LBW appeal, Jones not playing a shot, hit outside off, ball swinging in. Two more to Jones next ball - 3/159. Another no ball from Srinath, in his next over, brought up the 50 partnership. 86 balls, 59 mins. Amre is on now for Tendulkar, who has gone off. He immediately fields well to restrict Jones to a single - but that just allows Moody to take four from the next. Two more singles, and Aust 3/170. Moody drove a half volley from Raju to the mid off boundary to bring up the 250 lead. He then took two, then an all run four from a nice late cut from consecutive balls in Raju's next over. After a single to Moody, Raju is going over the wicket to Jones, who took two to very fine leg. 3/189 Prabhakar back on now for Srinath, single to Moody, then two to Jones. Jones drove back to Raju, who dropped it, it was driven hard, but straight to the bowler - should have been taken. Moody took a single to bring up his 50 4 fours, 73 balls, and also a partnership of 85, which is a fourth record partnership for Aust against India at Perth. 3/199 after the over. Jones took a single, which would have been four if Kapil hadn't saved it, which brought up the 200 for Aust. At Lunch, Aust 3/204, Jones 75, Moody 54. 100 runs in 29 overs. T5, Aus v Ind, D4, 3rd hour After lunch, Raju continued over the wicket to Moody, and then after a single, to Jones. Tendulkar is back, Vengsarkar is off. Srinath bowled to Jones, Kapil fielded well, threw at stumps at bowlers end, and hit, with Moody back - gave away overthrow. Jones and Moody look to be wanting quicker runs, quite a few boundaries coming in this session, 3/230 after 25 minutes, lead of 304 now. Also quick ones, twos, etc. Moody complained about Srikkanth changing position, just as Srinath came in to bowl a bouncer (which Moody just ignored), then cut the next ball, in the air, just wide of Prabhakar. Kapil Dev on again now, new ball is due after this over. Raju 22-5-0-68. Moody took four all run. Prabhakar back at the other end, and has the new ball. The 250 came up while I was on the phone. Appeal from Kapil for LBW against Jones, curently on 96 - too high and outside line of off stump. 3/259 Jones drove Prabhakar straight, just down the on side, for four, to bring up his hundred, 10 fours, 1 six, 202 balls in 290 minutes. At drinks, Australia 3/270, Jones 103, Moody 89, extras 10. T5, Aus v Ind, D4, tea Aust 3/270, 344 ahead, mid way through the fourth day. Prabhakar continues to Jones, easy single to 3rd man. Moody looked for a short single, Srikkanth threw at stumps, missed, and to the boundary. Four overthrows, Moody should have been out, Srikkanth didn't think, should have thrown to More, not at the stumps, there was plenty of time. Moody to 97 with a nice on drive to the boundary, straight, from Prabhakar, similar to the one Jones used to get his 100. Then two more, around to backward square, Tendulkar across quickly to prevent four. Nothing from next ball (driven slowly straight to mid off), then lbw appeal, from prabhakar only, from the final ball. 3/281. Jones takes a single first ball from Kapil, in the air through slips, and down to third man. Then Moody takes a single to fine leg, to bring up his hundred, in his first test against India - 9 fours, 140 balls, 177 mins. Eight other Australians have made hundreds in their first test against India, incl Border, Boon, and Jones from the current side. Prabhakar to Jones now - appeal from Prabhakar, high, going down leg side, possible edge (according to radio commentators). Leg bye. Border has just one ball of the over to face. Jones 124, Border 0. Jones takes four to backward square from Srinath, 6/325 now, lead 399. Jones takes another two, lead now 401. Another four, behind square again, from Jones. Another single, Azharuddin fielded well to limit it to that. Again Border just one ball, Jones 135, Australia 6/331. Jones takes a single from Srinath, Border then swings over mid wicket, ball just manages to roll into the boundary, and Border off the mark. (20 mins after the break). Then another four over mid off, hit hard, over Raju's head, with a horizontal bat. Then another two to third man, from a short ball. No run from the next ball - 6/344, Jones 137, Border 10. Jones starts with another single from Prabhakar. Single to Border, then two more to Jones. Border swings Srinath again, in the air, fell between three players, single to Border, now 12. Australia have just over 7 hours to get the 10 wickets, or India to get the runs - the latter seems unlikely already. Good over from McDermott, according to the radio (as we're still not an hour into the final session) - no runs. First run to Sidhu in the next over from Hughes, just the single. Another single to Sidhu first ball of McDermott's next over. Srikkanth opened his scoring with a two, from a ball that jumped at him, 0/4, 2 each. TV is finally coming back... Srikkanth beaten by Hughes - pushing the bat at the ball, but not quite enough to get the edge. Then takes three from an on drive to one aimed more at leg stump. Field is very attacking, lots of spaces around for runs. 0/8 after 4 overs. McDermott got one to left, and come back at Srikkanth - bat pulled back, and ball let go. Then beaten next ball, swung at - missed past outside edge. No ball next ball, quite wide as well. Four all run then, as Boon had to chase from short leg to deep mid on. Another lifting ball from McDermott, again swinging in as it passed, again let go. Another four all run to Srikkanth from McDermott's next over - just the same, down to deep mid on, and Boon has to chase from short leg. Four leg byes then, ball just took the pad and went very fine down the leg side, but well wide of Healy. 0/23, Srikkanth 13, Sidgu 5, extras 5. Whitney, fielding in covers, dives to save three from a shot by Sidhu next over, just one from what might have been four. McDermott's next over, another all run four - do I have to type it all again? Except this time it was Sidhu... Another four to Sidhu this over, this one actually made the boundary - Sidhu 15, Srikkanth 14, 0/34. Four more to Sidhu next over, also to the boundary, from a full toss. Reiffel in now, still seeking his first test wicket. Sidhu got one from the edge, in the air, between Border & Jones, maybe within catching distance of Jones, but he didn't get near it. Another single, 0/48, Sidhu 24, Srikkanth 19. Whitney on at the other end, edge from Sidhu, lands just in front of the slips field. LBW appeal next over, too high (apart from anything else), two maiden overs from Whitney. Srikkanth takes four from a cut from Reiffel - 50 partnership, 50 opening stand. 0/53. Srikkanth edged into slips from Whitney, again falling just short, not stopped cleanly and a single taken. Next ball, Sidhu fends, doesn't get an edge. Attendance today 5082. Reiffel in for the last over of the day, to Srikkanth, who looks to be prepared to defend this over. Single taken from one turned from near the hip to fine leg. India 0/55, Sidhu 24, Srikkanth 26, extras 5. India still need 387 to win, still possible, still very unlikely, win to Aust or draw seem more likely. 5th test, Aust v India, Day 5, 1st hour India started the day at 0/55 needing 442 to win the match. That would be truly memorable. Hughes bowled the first over to Srikkanth, good over, but notable mostly for one delivery that hit a crack and cut violently - well past the outside edge of the bat - Healy had to dive, almost in front of first slip to take it - actually stop it, as he didn't take cleanly. McDermott in at the other end, Sidhu took a leg bye to start the scoring for India. 0/56 after two overs today. Sidhu took the first run from the bat from Hughes next over, then attempted to lift McDermott over slips, but didn't manage to get the bat onto it (risky if he'd gotten an edge, safe if had gone over). Srikkanth took his first run from Hughes next over - Hughes then got one right through Sidhu. The first boundary was taken by Sidhu later that over, cut behind point. 0/62, Srikkanth 27, Sidhu 29, extras 6. Two more leg byes when Hughes got another to come from a crack, beat Srikkanth's bat, take his arm, and then get through slips - probably largely because Healy dived at it, where Taylor would have stopped it easily. The last ball of the over also got past the bat. First ball of McDermott's next over - thick edge from Sidhu, pretty straight to Reiffel in the finer of two gully positions - dropped. >From Hughes next over, Srikkanth got another four, edged between 2nd slip (Moody) and Reiffel (along the ground). Hughes then got the next four balls past the bat, and finished with a wider one. The Indian batsmen don't seem to be looking to score much so far today. Next over from Hughes, Sidhu attempted a drive, almost hit a return catch to Hughes, who picked it up just after it bounced, quite nicely, very low, to his right hand side. Srikkanth got one well over slips from McDermott from a slash - four. He then got four leg bytes down to very fine fne leg. 0/80, Srikkanth 35, Sidhu 33, extras 12. Sidhu played strangely to a bouncer from Hughes - hands up in front of the face, from the glove down, just wide of Boon. He slashed one to point, where Jones fielded, then mis-hit one wide of Jones and took two. Hughes off and Reiffel on now. And there is Reiffel's first test wicket, a great diving catch in that fine gully position, just like the one in the first innings (and at the position where Reiffel dropped a much easier one earlier). This was froma fairly thick edge from a deliberate shot. = Sidhu C Jones B Reiffel 35 1/82 @11:56 Drinks were taken as Manjrekar came out. Srikkanth 35. 1/82 5th test, Aust v India, Day 5, Lunch India began the second hour at 1/82, having just lost their first wicket, and adding just 27 in the first hour - they'll never get close to the 387 needed in the day at that rate. Reiffel finished his over to Manjrekar with a couple more good balls, then McDermott continued with a very good bouncer to Srikkanth, that had Srikkanth sitting on the pitch after not doing a great job of avoiding it, and certainly not playing it. Another maiden. Manjrekar got off the mark with four from the final ball of Reiffel's next over. Then after Srikkanth took a single from McDermott, he seemed to lose sight, or something, to a full toss, attempted to play it into the on side, and ended up with a single into the covers. 1/89. Srikkanth took another single from Reiffel - this is now his best total of the series (38). Manjrekar then got one from the edge high up the bat, that just fell a metre or two short of Jones (closer to two). Reiffel is bowling much better this innings (so far) than he did in the first. Whitney in to replace McDermott. First ball, caught behind appeal, but from Srikkanth's thigh pad, no appeal from short leg (Boon) or Whitney. But next ball was differemt, slash, and another good catch by Jones, above his head. = Srikkanth C Jones B Whitney 38 2/90 @12:19 Tendulkar in next, at number four again. He opened his scoring with a well hit four through covers, after just a couple of balls. Next over from Whitney, Tendulkar looked to attempt to get after the bowler, hit it towards McDermott at mid on - just falling short. Then an LBW appeal next ball, pitched outside leg. He took a single later in the over, and then Reiffel to Tendulkar, attempted drive, swung away a little, and outside edge to Moody at second slip. = Tendulkar C Moody B Reiffel 5 3/97 @12:33 Vengsarkar in next, about time he made a few runs, and India are going to need a lot from him if they're to save this match - a win now is close to impossible. He got off the mark with a four that flew threw slips, Jones diving at it, but unable to get to it this time, though not by far - may have just touched it with outstretched fingers, away high to his left. 3/102, Vengsarkar 4 (and a no ball in that over). Adharuddin nearly caught and bowled from the first ball of Whitney's next over, from a full toss - ball just landed short of him, as he attempted to get down to it - ended up just deflecting it, where it just went past the stumps (maybe with Manjrekar out of his ground), in the end they took a single. Next ball, Whitney to Manjrekar, moves away, edge to Healy. Good ball. = Manjrekar C Healy B Whitney 5 5/111 @12:52 Kapil Dev in now, first ball, big LBW appeal, given out. Whitney on a hat trick to Prabhakar, three slips, two gullies, and three around the bat on the leg side (leg gully, short leg, and short mid wicket). Played safely. Prabhakar off the mark with a single next ball. Azharuddin took another single from the final ball of the over. For Reiffel to Azharuddin, Border has 2 slips & 2 gullies, with 2 on the on side, short leg, and short mid wicket. Azharuddin drove through mid off for four - a good shot. Caught behind appeal later in the over, ball probably hit the pad rather than the ball. Azharuddin played a kind of flick/pull to fine leg for another single last ball before lunch. At lunch, India 6/114, Azharuddin 13, Prabhakar 1, extras 14. 5th test, Aust v India, Day 5, end of series Whitney opened the attack with India at 6/114 at lunch. In the next over, Prabhakar hung the bat out at a ball from McDermott, and Healy tool a regulation catch = Prabhakar C Healy B MdDermott 3 7/126 @13:47 More in next, got off the mark with a single after Azharuddin had taken one from Whitney's next over. Another single to Azharuddin, and then Whitney slanted one across More, who got a regulation edge through to Taylor at first slip. = More C Taylor B Whitney 1 8/129 @13:52 That's Whitney's 5th in the innings, the second time he's done that in tests. Its also the 32ns catch in the match, which equals the all time record. Raju in at number 10, to the non strikers end as McDermott started a new over. Azharuddin took a single early, Rajy played out the over. Same happened in Whitney's next over, early single to Azharuddin, who isn't trying to keep the strike - I think he realises that there's no way he can bat out almost 4 hours with just Raju and Srinath. Raju took two from a no ball later in this over from Whitney. He attempted to drive Whitney later - big swing, missed it. 8/133, Azharuddin 23, Raju 2. Azharuddin cut, attempting to go over slips? In any case, top edge, went high, just over Hughes running back from point - Azha took a single. Another good over from McDermott. 8/134 Second ball of Whitney's next over, and Azharuddin gets one on the pad, given out LBW, definitely no height problem (usual problem for LBW at Perth), probably just coming back enough to hit off stump. = Azharuddin LBW Whitney 24 9/134 @14:07 Srinath in last, to join Raju, with Whitney now 10 in the match for the first time (forst time in a first class match?). Srinath plays & misses at the first ball. next ball hit a crack and took off, away from Srinath, missed the bat by at least a foot - maybe two - pitched not far from leg. He played the next ball, then played at the one after that. McDermott in to Raju. Raju left the first, the next was short, taken on the glove as he tried to get away from it, just over his head and onto the ground. No run from the over. From Whitney, Raju swung, belted it over extra cover for three - quite safe (provided he got onto it, which he did), no fieldsmen near there. 9/138, Raju 5, Srinath 1. Raju took another three from the next over, then Whitney to Raju, slanted across, another regulation catch to Healy.
