Date-stamped : 14 Nov93 - 21:28 Hero Cup, CAB Jubilee RSA v WI, 14Nov93, Brabourne, Bombay South Africa beat West Indies by 41 runs in their rain-reduced 40 overs match on Sunday, part of the Cricket Association of Bengal's diamond jubilee five-team tournament. Scores: South Africa 180-5 (40 overs), West Indies 139 all out (37). South Africa overpowered West Indies by 41 runs in the Cricket Associa- tion of Bengal's diamond jubilee tournament on Sunday, helped by a one-day record five catches from Jonty Rhodes. An excellent all-round performance by the South Africans also owed much to Daryll Cullinan, who hit 70 out of his side's total of 180 for five before heat exhaustion forced him to retire ill with eight overs of the innings to go. In a contest reduced to 40 overs by overnight rain which crept under the covers, the West Indians were then hustled out of their stride by Rhodes's brilliance in the field. Phil Simmons stared in disbelief as Rhodes hung onto a stinging drive at short mid-wicket, Brian Lara could only ad- mire the full-length dive that accounted for him at point, and Anderson Cummins watched in awe as a left-handed clutch at gully sent him back as well. No outfielder had previously taken more than four catches in a limited-overs international. Off-spinner Pat Symcox was the most successful South African bowler, taking three crucial wickets with appreciable turn and unexpected bounce. Earlier in the day both Kepler Wessels and Andrew Hudson had struggled on a moist pitch when play started 100 minutes late. When they were dismissed in successive overs, both caught close to the wicket, South Africa were 11 for two and looked to be in serious trouble. But Cullinan and Jonty Rhodes began the revival with an aggressive partnership of 65 for the fourth wick- et, a combination of quick running and fearless hitting before Rhodes went for 40. Cullinan's 81-ball innings came to an en- forced close with eight overs left as the debilitating Bombay heat and humidity finally took its toll. He sank to his knees and was escorted off the field by the South African team doctor, having given South Africa an edge they were never to relinquish. In eight one-day internationals between the two sides, the pair are now level with four wins apiece. The ball was falling to- wards short point. The nearest to the catch was the Wicket keeper Dave Richardson. He did not make any move. Seeing that Rhodes, fielding at Point near the circle, was there. When he caught the ball he was in air, parallel to the ground. He ended sliding on his belly after finishing the catch. * Simmons mistimed an ondrive from Symcox. The ball took the bot- tom of the bat and flew low to wide mid-on. Rhodes fielding at Short mid-wkt, moved to his left. Diving to his left, he came up with the catch with his left hand. * The mostest-bestest :-) catch of them all was that got Cummins out. Cummins flashed outside the offstump and the ball flew of thick outside edge. The ball would have easily carried as a catch to third-man. No one saw Rhodes, fielding at point, move under- neath the ball and then took off upwards and came up with the catch !! The crowd reaction was that of a stunned disbelief... The adjudicator, Roger Binny, had no second thoughts, in naming Rhodes man of the match. The game was not televised in South Africa due to the ongoing dispute over television rights in India so we had to make do with radio commentary and scores flashed up on the tv. The game started late because of overnight rain and was reduced to 40 overs per side. West Indies won the toss and sent SA in to bat. SA were soon in trouble, losing both openers with only 9 runs on the board. Cronje and Cullinan helped push the score on but when Cronje was out for 12 it seemed as if the WI were well and truly on top. Rhodes, however, had other ideas and his 40 off 42 balls provided just the boost the SA in- nings needed. Cullinan played yet another good innings and was on 70 when he was forced to retire because of heat exhaustion. McMillan (with 24) and Richardson (with 17) pushed the SA total to 180/5 at the end of 40 overs. The WI innings also started badly with Lara going cheaply and Haynes retiring hurt on 7. Phil Simmons came in and played a really aggresive innings and while he was there the SA total of 180 suddenly looked very small. The turning point in the match came when Simmons was brilliantly caught by a diving Jonty Rhodes for 29. After the departure of Simmons, wickets fell at regular intervals. Haynes, who returned to continue his innings, was last man out on 29 when the WI total was 139. Offspinner Symcox took 3 wickets. Jonty Rhodes was named man of the match for his 5 catches and 40 runs. His 5 catches represents a record for an outfielder in 1 day interna- tionals. For the record, WI and SA have now played 8 one day internationals against each other, WI have one 4 and SA have won 4. Thanks to Frank Sokolic on r.s.c. Contributed by Shash (sshah@*.acns.nwu.edu)
