In a do-or-die battle at the Moinul Haq stadium here, the Sri Lankans piled on 263 for six in 50 overs and then shot out Zim- babwe for 208. Sri Lanka will finish among the top four if they defeat South Africa in their last league match at Guwahati on November 19. They will also go through if Zimbabwe, who gained a single point from a rain-abandoned match against South Africa, lose to both India and the West Indies. The temperamental Sri Lankans, aware that another defeat would send them packing, raised their game to outwit the inexperienced Zimbabweans. Their batsmen ran into form for the first time in the tournament, making hay on an easy-paced wicket against a list less attack. Aravinda de Silva, injured for the last match against the West Indies, celebrated his return with a top score of 68. Skipper Arjuna Ranatunga contributed 59. De Silva was associated in two useful stands of 65 for the third wicket with Hashan Tillakaratne (24) and 96 for the fourth with Ranatunga. Sri Lanka's sixth wicket fell at 225 but the unbeaten seventh wicket pair of Rumesh Ratnayake and Romesh Kaluwitharna added 38 in the last 4 overs. Ratnayake, returning to international cricket after two years as a replacement for the injured Asanka Gurusinha, hammered an un- beaten 32. David Brain was the most successful Zimbabwe bowler with two for 45 in 10 overs. Zimbabwe, asked to score at 5.2 runs an over, collapsed against the seven-man Sri Lankan attack. Left-arm spinner Sanath Jaya- suriya picked up four wickets. Zimbabwe, produced a determined 77-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Alistair Campbell (37) and Andy Waller. His aggre- ssive 55 runs in 46 balls included seven fours and huge six off off-spinner Ruwan Kalpage. Zimbabwe in reply were 208 all out in 49 overs. The win ended a Sri Lankan victory drought on their twin-tour of Sharjah and India. They had lost six matches, four in Sharjah and two here -- to India and West Indies. Ranantunga's all-round performance, including two wickets for 24, got him the man of the match award.
