The Lankans began their run chase in a disastrous manner against the fiery West Indian pace attack and lost their top three batsmen-- Roshan Mahanama, Chandika Hathura- singhe and Sanath Jayasuriya-- with only 21 on the board. Ranatunga's dismissal at 118 was a big blow for the Lankan hopes as the Lankan skipper was their most experienced player and was also capable of turning the match around with his pulverising strokes. Ranatunga, trying to cut down the asking rate to reasonable level, attempted an al- mighty pull off Hooper, missed the line of the ball completely and was smartly stumped by Junior Murray. At his dismissal the asking rate had climbed to well over 9. Though Tilakaratne was batting fluently at the other end, there was none other to flog the bowling. Tilakaratne had added 61 runs for the seventh wick- et in 8.1 overs, the highest of the lankan innings, with Kalpage when Benjamin came back for his second spell to york him and bowl Duleep Liyanage in the space of 16 balls which sealed lanka's fate well and good. Despite a vali- ant knock of 104 by left hander Hashan Tilakaratne, com- piled in 116 balls with seven fours, the Lankans found the asking rate climbing steadily and could manage only 222 for the loss of eight wickets. Winston Benjamin, who used the pace and variable bounce of the pitch to the optimum effect to return career- best figures of 5 for 22 (including the first three wickets) in ten overs-- bowled in two spells-- shared the man of the match award and the prize money of US Dollars 2,000 equally with Tilakaratne. west indies, fresh from their title-triumph in the champions trophy at sharjah, picked up two points while sri lanka, who lost to india on sunday last, are without any point from two matches in the five-nation tournament. ====> MORE bombay, nov 9 (pti) the west indies, opening their campaign in the hero cup cab diamond jubilee tournament, lost two early wickets before compiling 268 for eight wickets in 50 overs in today's hero cup league match against sri lanka here. left- handed brian lara, who opened the innings with desmond haynes -- leading the side in the absence of richie richardson who opted out of the match -- stroked a brilliant 67 with eleven fours to keep the west indies run-rate at a healthy plus four per over after they lost the wickets of haynes (0) and phil simmons (3) for 26 runs. the trinidadian, who timed the ball effortlessly to play some stunning drives in front of the wicket, was involved in two rollicking partnerships -- 78 runs for the third wicket in just 12.3 overs with carl hooper (38, 37 balls) and 61 for the fifth wicket with james adams (55 in 55 balls, 4 fours) in 11 overs. later, anderson cummins slammed 41 in just 19 balls as the west indians, set the sri lankans an asking rate of 5.38 to win the match and notch their first victory after five straight one-day defeats. the west indians, fresh from their recent triumphant run in the champions trophy at sharjah, were rocked by the loss of two early wickets on a pacy pitch where the ball flew around in the first hour's play. haynes, with a phenomenal one-day aggregate of 8,204 runs but in need of a big score after a string of single-digit innings at sharjah, was the first to go -- edging an intended drive off pramodaya wickeramasinghe to second slip roshan mahanama in the third over of the match. from ten for one the caribbeans added 16 more runs before losing their most prolific scorer at sharjah -- phil simmons -- to the other fast-medium bowler, duleep liyanage. simmons left in similar fashion to haynes and he west indians were in trou- ble. but lara, notwithstanding the early setbacks, set about stroking the ball fluently and, with carl hooper for company, repaired the damage and also increased the run-rate from three per over to four per over. After flicking Liyanage, who was a bit wayward in direction, for a four, Lara pushed him past mid-off for his second boundry to set the tone for his stylish knock which was made in 109 balls. The introduction of Chandika Hathurasinghe perked up the run-rate considerably and Windies, 38 for two after 12 overs, cross the 50-run mark in the 13th over with Lara slashing and cover-driving the bowler for two boundaries. Lara hit two more four off the same bowler in his next over and when off-spinner Ruwan Kalpage replaced him, set about attacking him too as the runs came in a fast clip with Hooper also following suit. the second fifty of the innings was raised in only 7.1 overs. Hooper fell at 104, bowled by Ranatunga's off-cutter and then left-hander Keith Arthurton was stumped by Kaluwitharne off-spinner Muralitharan as Windies slid to 111 for four in the 25th over. But Lara and new man James Adams prevented a mid-order collapse by putting on 61 runs for the fifth wicket. Lara finally fell to Ranatunga when he was about to open out further.Adams and Roger Harper fell in quick succession in the early part of the slog overs, both con- sumed by Kalpage who bowled a better third spell after being hit all over in the first two spells totalling five overs. The West Indies, 220 for seven in the 46th over when Harper fell, boosted their total well past the 250-run mark thanks to the long handle employed by Anderson Cummins (41 in 19 balls, four fours,2 sixes) who was severe on Wickramasinghe, bowling his third spell, and hit him for a couple of fours and a huge six over long off. He later lofted Kalpage over long on for another six in the last over of their innings. The West Indians added 72 runs in the last ten overs. For Lanka, skipper Ranatunga and Muralitharan were reasonably economical. Wickramasinghe bowled a tight and lively first spell but the others were too expensive. For Sri Lan- ka, Pramodaya Wickramasinghe started off well before being carted during the slog phase while skipper Arjuna Ranatun- ga and Muthiah Muralitharan bowled the middle overs reasonably well. All of them were among the wickets along with Kalpage who took three for 64 in ten overs. ====> MORE Favourites West Indies, fresh from their Champions Trophy triumph in Sharjah, continued in the same vein on Tuesday by beating Sri Lanka in the five-nation Hero Cup limited-overs tournament.
