After Marvan Atapattu had won the toss for the third consecutive time and invited West Indies to bat first. Floyd Reifer and David Joseph hit a half-century apiece and shared a 97-run third wicket partnership off 117 balls to give their side a chance of registering their first win in the one-day series. Reifer top scored with 69 off 126 balls with five fours, and Joseph, a powerful 58 off 66 balls inclusive of four sixes and two fours. Sri Lanka bowlers and fielders kept West Indies pegged down to a total of 148 for 2 in 40 overs, before they broke loose to rattle up 90 in the final 10 overs.
