The Christchurch Press Otago v Wellington (Shell Trophy)
The Christchurch Press - 27 February - 2 March 1999

Day 2 Report

In Oamaru, Mark Richardson hit his seventh first-class century for Otago against Wellington on the second day of their trophy match at Centennial Park.

Otago reached a satisfying 308 for six by stumps after Richardson brought up his century in risky fashion, edging a Richard Petrie delivery through the slips region for a boundary.

``It was a good nut. It nipped away, I followed it and nicked it,'' Richardson said. ``It was a ball you wouldn't be too disappointed to get out to ... to bring up a hundred with it was quite hard case.''

Petrie later had his revenge by claiming Richardson's wicket, caught at gully by Grant Donaldson, when the batsman had reached 110. Richardson scored his runs off 239 balls in an innings containing 16 boundaries.

The match was reduced to a three-day affair when the first day's play was abandoned due to several damp spots on the pitch caused by rain.
