The Electronic Telegraph Hampshire v Warwickshire, National League First Division, 1999
Rob Wildman - 3 May 1999

Penney able to cash in

Warwicks (172-3) bt Hampshire (168) by 7 wkts

Any prospect of a competitive match was ruined when Hampshire lost their last seven wickets for 34 runs, thus giving Warwickshire a simple task.

A dismal first defeat of the season for Hampshire was completed when Alex Morris dropped Trevor Penney off Nixon McLean.

By that stage Penney (55) and David Hemp (72 not out) had the match won, having scored freely on both sides of the wicket, in a partnership of 128 in 22 overs.

Penney undid the secure work when bowled by Shaun Udal when the scores were level, leaving the winning runs to be hit by Dougie Brown.

Hampshire elected to bat and were looking for 240 when 134 for three in the 33rd over. But when Adrian Aymes departed for 26, having put on 52 with Will Kendall, the innings collapsed. The first five Hampshire batsmen made double figures, but a domineering partnership never materialised.
