Aussies in semis;Mark Waugh 110

Madras, India, Monday- Mark Waugh continued his World Cup run spree with his third century of the tournament to power favour- ites Australia to victory over New Zealand by six wickets in their day-night quarter-final here today.

Waugh, flourishing in his role as an opener in limited overs internationals, struck 110 in 112 balls to follow hundreds in the group games against Kenya and India.

With twin brother Steve Waugh playing a fine supporting role by making 59 not out, Australia moved efficiently to their target at 289 for four with 13 balls to spare after New Zealand had scored 286 for nine in their full quota of 50 overs.

Australia will play West Indies in their semifinal in Mohali, In- dia, on Thursday.

New Zealand's hopes of seizing an upset win had been built on a wonderful all-round performance by Chris Harris, who hammered 130, bowled his 10 overs of medium pace quite tightly and fielded superbly.

The New Zealanders' innings was transformed from 44 for three by a fourth wicket partnership of 168 in 27 overs between captain Lee Germon and Harris.

The capacity crowd of 42,000 revelled in their controlled, aggressive batting, with Germon making 89 off 97 deliveries, hit- ting one six and nine fours.

Harris eclipsed his previous one-day international best of 68 not out, facing 124 balls for his 130 which contained four sixes and 12 fours.
