India 5 for 309 (Tendulkar 124*, Sehwag 63, Laxman 51, Dhoni 6*) v Australia

Tendulkar ton gives India the upper hand on day one

Tendulkar's 126-run partnership with VVS Laxman wrested the initiative, but a superlative spell of old-ball bowling from Brett Lee righted the balance on a surface where even totals in excess of 550 haven't been enough to guarantee victory in the recent past. At stumps India were placed at 309 for 5.

Tendulkar dominates Adelaide landscape

Sachin Tendulkar's 39th Test hundred was one of his finest, and it rescued India from the tight corner they found themselves in when Sourav Ganguly was given out midway through the afternoon. It took him 18 balls to get off the mark but when he did, it was worth waiting for, a magnificent on-drive off Lee. He took on Brad Hogg, hitting him for 54 runs off 53 balls. He showed his aggressive intent when on 92 he launched Michael Clarke for a six, followed immediately by a four through covers to bring up his hundred.

Tendulkar has scored 451 runs in the series, which is his highest, beating the 446 he scored against the same team in 1997-98.

Tendulkar's aggregate in Australia is 1480, which is the highest by an Indian in an overseas country.

We will take the Twenty20 as one of the practice games. I don't know how the Australians will take it but we'll take it as a good opportunity to get the new guys in and let them get used to the conditions.

The Tendulkar and Laxman show

VVS Laxman came to the crease at the dismissal of Sourav Ganguly for seven. India were at 156 for 4 and another wicket would have brought the out-of form Mahendra Singh Dhoni in, followed by the tail. But Laxman has been in fine form in Australia and he started off with flick to the leg-side boundary in the first over he faced. Settled in, he worked as a perfect foil to the attacking Sachin Tendulkar and the two brought up their hundred-run partnership in only 159 balls. When Laxman departed India were at 282 for 5.
