Background
East Londoner Mark Boucher played his debut first-class game for Border in 1995/96, but with the stable presence of Dave Richardson as South African keeper, his first international match came when his senior gloveman was injured. He had to wait longer until he got the position permanently, when Richardson retired.

Basic business
Boucher is one of the best 'keepers in world cricket today, holding many records. He was the fastest to 100 dismissals and went the most number of innings without conceding a bye. While these can partly be attributed to South Africa's lethally accurate pace attack, Boucher took half-chances with monotonous regularity. His batting ability has also shored up the innings on more than one occasion, notably in his second Test when he shared a record ninth wicket partnership of 195 with Pat Symcox against Pakistan.

Operations
Boucher is one of the quieter 'keepers in world cricket today, satisfied with pouching the catches that come his way without appealing needlessly for more. His quiet determination and level temperament show themselves behind the stumps and in front of them as Boucher has played many crucial knocks for his team.

Overseas performance
Boucher has considerable overseas experience; countries include India, New Zealand, England and West Indies. Although all his hundreds have been scored at home, he has demonstrated his batting ability abroad as well. His keeping, of course, has been at a uniformly high level regardless of venue or conditions.

Development initiatives
A good wicket keeper must be naturally very fit, and Boucher fits this mould well. He has no record of injury problems as yet.

Conclusions
Boucher is likely to stay in the South African team for some time to come, in the absence of any competition at the domestic level. The quality of South Africa's attack will also ensure that many catches and stumpings come his way. With his talent, he should also contribute effectively with the bat in any series.
