Cricinfo: India in South Africa 2006-07

South Africa v India, 2nd Test, Durban, 4th day

Pollock provides the ballast

Yet again Shaun Pollock demonstrated his ability to pull his side out of a crisis with a battling half-century that went a long way in putting South Africa in a dominant position. He walked in at 143 for 6, with his side staring down the barrel, but provided the innings with much-needed calm. Normally it is with the ball that Pollock works wonders but today he revealed why he deserves the appellation of best bowling allrounder.

He cut and drove beautifully, and a couple of the pulls in front of square where he picked up the ball from outside off stump were breathtaking. He cracked ten fours in his 99-ball knock and added 70 with Andrew Hall before finding an able ally in No.11 Morne Morkel. The duo eked out 52 crucial runs and took South Africa from a relatively shaky position to one of dominance.

With the lead 231, it was still anyone's game. By the time Pollock and Morkel were finished, India were left to do what they have achieved only once, chase down a total in excess of 300.
