1st Test: Day 4 - West Indies v India at Antigua, 2-6 June 2006 [ Scorecard ]
Jaffer shows he is here to stay

Wasim Jaffer's affair with Antigua just got better and better. Not content with just a century at the end of the third day, he carried on and, on the fourth, joined an elite group of Indian batsmen - Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Sardesai and Navjot Sidhu - all credited with double centuries in the West Indies. After a disappointing outing in the first innings, one felt that Jaffer owed something, given that it was his third coming to the national side.

There was of course an element of luck when he resumed his innings, surviving a couple of tough dropped chances. The least any batsman can do in such a situation is to make the fielders pay and Jaffer did precisely that, putting a heavy price on his wicket. Probably the most pleasing aspect of Jaffer's batting was his willingness to curb his defensive instincts and force the pace. Rahul Dravid, at the other end was prepared to play second fiddle and witness some glorious drives and delicate nudges to third man off Jaffer's bat. He shed his inhibitions against spin by stepping down the track and lofting Dave Mohammed over long on for six. He survived an impressive spell from Corey Colleymore, being regularly beaten outside off stump, but made amends by putting away the loose deliveries from the other bowlers on an easing pitch.

Jaffer added a crucial 203 with Dravid, a partnership which took India from strength to strength. His wagon wheel revealed runs to all corners of the ground with as many as 12 boundaries on the off side. The bowlers, particularly Colleymore and Dwayne Bravo, regularly pitched the ball outside the off stump, tempting Jaffer to drive, which he did, getting the full face of the bat behind the ball. In the context of the game, his double century made the difference in India's comeback bid, setting up a solid platform for Mahendra Singh Dhoni to subsequently free his arms.
