Younis powers Pakistan to series-levelling win

Younis Khan's first century against India proved to be memorable in more ways than one as Pakistan recorded their highest-ever successful one-day chase with a four-wicket win in Mohali.

Younis arrived in the middle in the sixth over of the innings with the asking rate already over six an over. Although starting cautiously, he kept the scorecard ticking with singles and twos. In between he sneaked in fours through flicks off over-pitch deliveries and glances down to the fine leg. He exploited the area behind the wicket for quick runs, nudging four boundaries and hitting a six in the 40 runs he got there.

While batting with Mohammad Yousuf, Younis did get bogged down by the nagging line and length by the Indian bowlers but a 69-run partnership with Shoaib Malik and a 102-run stand with Misbah-ul-Haq kept Pakistan in the hunt, even as the required rate touched ten-an-over.

Employing the sweep shot to great effect - in both directions - Younis swept Sourav Ganguly for six and Sachin Tendulkar for consecutive fours behind square as India paid the price for playing with four specialist bowlers. Then he brought on Pakistanís 200 with a six slog swept off Harbhajan Singh. By the time he fell, bowled by Zaheer Khan in the 46th over, Younis had taken Pakistan to 276 and left Shahid Afridi to navigate them to the required 46 off 28 balls. His innings was more of a stealthy accumulation of runs, rather than muscling them out of the bowlers.
