3rd Test: India v Pakistan at Bangalore, Dec 8-12, 2007

Kumble heroics nearly lead to stunning victory

Anil Kumble

When India left Pakistan just 47 overs to score an improbable 374 for victory, the Bangalore Test appeared to be meandering to a draw. As the opening pair added 44, thoughts turned to how soon the match could be called off but a dramatic intervention from Anil Kumble pushed Pakistan to the precipice before bad light saved them from acute embarrassment with 11 overs still to be bowled.

India were already on the brink of a first series victory against Pakistan on home soil since 1979-80, and Kumble tried his utmost to crown the series triumph with a win in his hometown.

After Pakistanís openers had played out 13 overs, Kumble send down a rocket (clocked at 109 kmph) to rearrange Yasir Hameedís stumps. This was the fifth time in the series that Kumble had trapped Hameed. Three balls later, he had the prize wicket of Younis Khan, who had scored three fourth-innings centuries in his previous four Tests, and the crowd suddenly found its voice. Younis played a loose shot, looking to work the ball to the on side but only managed to punch the ball right back to Kumble.

Salman Butt was the next to fall to Kumbleís wiles, as he tried to cut a short-of-a-length delivery, only to get a thick edge which was smartly snapped up by the wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. Faisal Iqbal had scored a counterattacking 51 but was dismissed when an attempted pull to a quick, short ball went straight up in the air to Ishant Sharma.

Kamran Akmal walked out to join Misbah-ul-Haq, but this time Pakistan's premier rescue act couldn't even get started. Kumble started his cricket as a medium-pace bowler and those roots were very much in evidence in the quicker delivery that deviated away just enough to peg back Akmal's off stump.

Indiaís charge towards victory was halted by bad light and Kumbleís fifth five-wicket haul against Pakistan wasnít enough to provide a more emphatic series victory. Kumble, though, will be satisfied to have tasted success in his first series as captain.
