Shoaib Akhtar

Notable Performances

Success at the Pepsi Cup, India, 1999

While Akhtar did not get the maximum number of wickets for Pakistan or top the bowling averages, he dealt psychological and physical blows to the batsmen by attacking them constantly. In the first match against Sri Lanka, when Atapattu smashed a four off him, Akhtar replied with a short ball that struck the batsman on the hand. Atapattu had to retire hurt. In the match against India in Mohali, Shoaib let fly a short ball that crashed into Ganguly's rib cage and the batsman had to be helped off the field. Since this incident Ganguly's batting has really petered off. Akhtar's ability to generate tremendous pace off the placid, dry Indian wickets left many wondering how he would perform on the quick pitches in Australia.
