Steve Waugh and Udayan - An emotional bonding

This is his fifth visit to UDAYAN and Steve Waugh has donated medicines worth A$ 50,000 with a promise to increase the amount fivefold annually. And for the first time, he was accompanied by wife Lynette, who also wholeheartedly entered into the spirit of things. Garlanded by the children, the first lady of Australian cricket appeared delighted as she posed for photos with her husband.

Steve now plans to expand his operations in India and the first project on the cards would be 'Ashray', another home for girls provided he has the funds. He described coming to UDAYAN as something he loves and looks forward to. Drawing a comparison between his cricketing career and charity work, Waugh said, "I love playing for Australia and winning Tests for my country. But perhaps it's more important to see these children get more opportunity to develop the way they have." "I feel great for having played a small part in their development and happiness. This helps me grow as a person. And I now always encourage people to get more involved in charity," Waugh said. Waugh is associated with OPAL which is an Adelaide-based Overseas Pharmaceutical Aid for Life (OPAL) which has assured medical aid to the tune of 2,50,000 Australian dollars and plans to spread its operations associating with various NGO's all over the country.

OPAL is looking for an Indian brand ambassador and has requested Waugh to talk to Sachin Tendulkar. Having straddled the cricketing colluseum as a gladiator, the Australian captain is planning to enter the celluloid world with a movie involving UDAYAN .The script for the film is ready and Waugh is in the lookout for an Indian producer and director. The film gains more importance as Waugh has been conferred the Order of Australia for his work on Udayan. Waugh himself would act in the film, the subject of which will be encompassing cricket and Udayan.

After his stay at the UDAYAN, Waugh would travel to Chennai to take part in an inauguration of a karting championship pioneered by MRF .He would be accompanied by Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar.
